Subject headings (or subject terms) are assigned to articles in a database based on topic, and they allow users to do more precise searches. Different databases often use different subject headings. Two common ones in the health fields include MeSH (Medical Subject Headings), used in PubMed and MEDLINE, and CINAHL Subject Headings, used in CINAHL Plus.
